Bring Spring to Your Creative Space

Updated: Apr 4

Do a 30-minute creative space cleanout

Grab a vacuum, a garbage bag, your outbox, some glass jars, a timer and head to your creative corner or space. Set the timer to 30 minutes and get to work. Don't worry about how far you'll get or whether you'll be "finished" today.

Go by sections: drawer(s), desk, side table(s), closet(s) etc. Try to divide the space into small sections but finish each one before moving on to the next. Just focus on respecting the entire set time (no more, no less than 30 minutes).

Here's your plan:

Group materials by family (brushes, graphite pencils, colored pencils, watercolors, gouaches, acrylics, etc. and within each family by large groups of colors (warm / cold or yellow-orange-red / brown / green / blue / white-gray-black / etc. and separate them into jars (pencils and brushes) or small boxes (paints, erasers, sharpeners, etc.)

Group the papers by used and unused. Within each section by sizes A5/A4/A3 etc. Keep them together by putting them inside covers or using rubber bands.

Later, (I don't think you will find the time today 😁) you can group the used papers (paintings) by collections.

However, choose one you really like and set it aside.

Throw away anything that is broken and/or cannot be reused = garbage bag.

Consider donating materials or utensils that you don't use but are still in good condition to schools or students = outbox.

If there is something in these last two sections that you still have as a reference (brand, color, product description) take a photo and put it in the respective section for garbage or donation.

Clean the surfaces of tables and cabinets, vacuum the dust and dirt around the floor or other surfaces.

So just... keep going... until the alarm goes off at 30 minutes.

If you feel like you left things unfinished when time ran out, take a moment to assess what else needs to happen to get the space in good shape, and then estimate how long it will take to complete that on another day.

Because for today, we're done! And done is better than perfect.

Even if all you did was group the materials by family and colors, notice how that alone can completely change the way the space looks at you. I bet your creative space is already looking better!

Find and frame some art

Find something inspiring that you'd like to display on a visible wall in your creative space, then take the necessary steps to frame and hang it.

The art you choose is totally up to you – the only qualification is that it has to be something that inspires you. It might something you've done for a while, but you're putting it off when it comes to the part where you actually put it on the wall. Or it could be something done by any other creative – the important part is that you must love it and be inspiring for its colors, positivity and beauty.

Measure your piece. If you already have a frame in the right size or can find one locally and quickly, even better. Truly important is that you take the initiative today and once your art is framed and ready, you'll hang it right away.

Surround yourself with things that inspire and make you happy.
