How to Make a Paper Collage

Updated: Sep 26, 2021

Nothing to do or just short in time? Let's make a #papercollage in less than 10 minutes without more goals than combine colors and textures.

The Final Result

The word collage comes from the French word "coller," which means "to glue." A collage is made by gluing items onto a base. The base used is usually paper or canvas. You can use various items such as magazine pictures, fabric, photographs, and/or old wrapping #paper.

"Collage is like a hall of mirrors. Every direction you look, you see something different and visually stimulating." - Nita Leland

  • The first step is to choose a base. It can be a piece of heavier paper, cardboard, or any other colorful surface. You can use a clean (or failed) page of your sketchbook, also. Just choose something more resistant than the ordinary paper you use in your printer machine (80g/m).

  • The second step would be to start collecting the paper. In my example, I'm using old magazines that the supermarkets offer for free. As I #cut or #rip, I pile them by colors and textures to keep similar options together.

  • As I consider to have a good amount of options, I start filling the background. I often choose a neutral one: white, gray, or black. I #glue the pieces and prepare two or three scenes, ready to use. I usually use stick glue if the paper is not heavy and liquid glue if it's more substantial paper.

  • After that, I start composing using two or three intense colors that go well together. Probably with texture, accents, and tones. I combine cutting with tearing strips of paper, but it's up to you and just do what you prefer. I often take pictures of the different options before I glue them.

  • After my final option is made, I glue all the elements, set them aside, and let them dry under a heavy book to keep it flat.

The process can be as straightforward or complex as you want it to be.
